Title: Sahara Trip 2009

Jimbo - October 30, 2009 09:16 AM (GMT)
Hi,

Well I have been a bit quiet recently on progress on the Fug, the reason is I have just returned from a trip to the sahara! It wasn't your usual trip either, me and a mate were planning to go to Libya and head south to the sand on a pair of motorcycle sidecar combinations he owns. Shame the Fug wasn't ready, it would have been perfect :D Anyway, in the end due a few factors and the sheer scale of the task we undertook we only managed to be in Libya for one day... we decided to spend the other 9 days tooling around Tunisia and get to the Sahara there instead.
For anyone thinking of a trip like this Tunisia is actually perfect. It is pretty easy to get into (no visas required unlike Libya, no guide required unlike Libya) and they speak French so it's easy to muddle through - my rusty GCSE french was pushed to the limit though!! You can get access to some good off road pistes, the best of which is Douz to Ksar Ghilane through the upper reaches of the Sahara detailed in the Sahara Overland book. Although we were told that the bikes wouldn't make it on the sand and a 4x4 was necessary the 1 wheel drive we had coped pretty well. Once I have posted the videos on you tube I'll give you all a link so you can see what we did.
There are a few pics here though

Great photos, looks like you had one heck of a holiday!

Certainly makes Tunisia look worth visiting.

It sure was a great trip and I would recommend a trip to Tunisia - especially in a Fug! You could have so much fun there in one, especially one prepared to do a bit of light off roading! And with temperatures in the 30's in October still you can actually enjoy driving it in the warm with no rain

If you look at Youtube and type in jimbosc1975 in the search box my videos will come up. I have added a couple more today (which aren't showing yet) and have a couple more longer ones to add (once I work out how to cut them down to 10 mins) which show some really good bits through the bigger dunes as we arrived at Ksar Ghilane

Now I've got to finish the Fugitive and convince the other half to come with me!!
