Why are so set on it being mid-engined?

bobacat - June 29, 2005 07:49 PM (GMT)
I have this thing for big engines I know it's silly and sad but well you can't really hang a 5.2 V8 out the back well least I have not seen it done yet.
Oh and it's kind of differenet I suppose.
May be I should be thinking about a Sabaru engine version see that fellow ricola ? web site
he squeeezed one into karman ghia something or other may be that is the way to go. what do you think?

Either way I still need a four seater and Fug 4 seem rarer than rocking horse sh*t

would you agree ?

Anway I would realy like fug but I am tempted by the dark side

May be even be a beach buggy time is passing me by here

Also while I am on the topic I have seen else where people saying the fug is a bit on the weakside at the front for off road duties. they were advising bracing etc .
they were saying this was sorted on the f30 ?
What is the deal on this?

I am getting bore waiting for a fug 4 but I don't want some one else mess i.e bits

IIRC John Dingley, the guy who used to run the Fugitive Club way back when had a Fugitive 2 with a Rover V8 in the back, and I don't think that he had problems. I don't think that he was the only one that did so, either.

Anyone know what happened to John and his Fug?

I think that a big iron block V8 might be going a bit far though - an ally Rover's ideal. You can also get the transaxle adaptors quite easily.

Another favourite engine a while back was the flat 4 alfa - there was at least one of those in the club, too.

Ah yes, flat 4s - Subaru. They are getting to be quite the thing now, aren't they? Really cool. But ... a word of warning - expensive too. Ridiculously so. As an example - I have a Legacy 2.5 - it needed a new exhaust recently. We stopped totting up the price when we got to £1500. That's just obscene. I ended up getting a custom stainless job for 1/5 of the price. Subarus get scrapped because minor problems are too expensive to fix. Bear that in mind before you buy an engine.

About off-roading, UVA used to sell an off-roading kit which was basically extra tubes for you to weld into the chassis. If you have a look at the UVA brochure, you can see that some of those pictured have extra triangulation going to the roll bar - that's part of the kit. It was £25.20, or £85.50 fitted - I kind of wish that I'd got one now - it seems a small amount now but at the time the chassis was only £370 fully welded so it was significant at the time.

UVA's position was that you needed the kit for serious off-roading. Light off-roading didn't need it. But, it's only a few tubes - someone here may have a picture or fitting instructions, or be able to describe where the extra tubes are if you're really bothered.

Something else to bear in mind is that if you put too mental an engine in the car it will need something pretty special in the transaxle department. And special means expensive, and heavy too. So lots of extra bracing everywhere.

You can get to the point where you might as well have bought a Humvee <_<

You are quite correct in this statement.........a mild rover V8 will lunch a VW gear box quite easily, this happened of the mid-engined F33's, hence UVA later favoured the porsche mid-engined V8 gearbox.........as the fugs are quite light, you dont need the massive torque of a V8.......OK its good to tell your mates down the pub, but I can assure you its not needed.........I have a 95Bhp flat-4 1.5ltr Alfa-sud motor in the back of my fug-4 and it goes like the clappers.......95bhp in a 500Kg car is quite enough to shread the rear tyres and scare the crap out of me..........to be honest I rarely get above 60mph, as the sense of speed is doubled in an open car.........I would stick along the lines of a mid or rear mounted 4 cylinder.

I was thinking that a mid mounted Subaru legacy engine and gearbox would be a nice mid-conversion, but I dont know if the gearbox could be made to do this.

certainly a flat-4 alfa 33 1.7 8v or 16v engine and gearbox will deffo mid-fit.

I was also thinking a longitudinally mounted bike engine (R1, busa etc) linked to a sierra diff unit would go well too.....

the main problem with mid-mounting an engine in a fug-4 is it must clear the torsion tube beam, therfore making the engine installation much higher than need be, I dare say it may handle like a boat.......but it does work.

for the cost of an Alfa-VW adaptor plate (about £250) and a secondhand alfa 33 1.7 115Bhp flat-4 twin webber carbed motor (about £100 from ebay/breakers) you can be having some serious fun for not a lot of money ;)

Bike engine - that sounds cool

You could have a Fugabusa :D

fov - June 30, 2005 09:08 PM (GMT)
A bike engine was the idea of me getting a fug. Not totaly abandodned, just postponed for now. Not entirely sure how to deal with the gearbox and drive but it may happen.

bobacat - June 30, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
alfa sound the way to go but can you hang one out the back like a vw unit ? wher e do you put the rad ?
can you use the alfa box?

Knighty - July 6, 2005 03:27 PM (GMT)
Hi Bobcat - My 95bhp alfa-sud 1.5 motor is mounted hanging out the rear, on a VW swing-axle gearbox........the radiator is a standard alfa-sud motor which is mounted accross the rear of the fug - it works quite OK!......dont forget yor still quite welcome to come over and have a look & ride, then you can see the alfa-installation for yourself........let me know

I design engines for a living, and I can tell you that the flat-4 alfa engines are really under-rated engines.........thay are really good value for money.......come standard with twin dual downdraught webbers/dellortos, and rev to hell and back.........come over and I'll demonstrate to you!

cheers
