Title: gearbox oil
bobacat - September 21, 2005 07:38 PM (GMT)
what do people think?
is it worth going to synthetic oil in the gearbox for a smoother change
well smoother than standard ;)
Mines is due a change well it feels like it anyway
probably black porridge if anyone fancy some
Bob
"it's getting better every day"

Well there are many things that could be messing up your gear change - obvious thing is worn synchro, but who knows? It could be lots of theings, including a badly set up shift rod.
Bit, oil's a cheap thing to try, so why not?
If you'd have asked about synthetic in the engine I'd have said no. but I can't think of any reason why not in the gearbox.

bob my advice is as follows:-
1) just make sure the box is full of oil, the gear change gets quite bad when the oil is low
2) synthetic wont make any difference, just some conventional gear oil will do
3) get a new pair of red gear linkage rubbers - where the rod joins the gearbox, from Big-Boys-Toys, as the standard black rubber items get very sloppy and soft with age
4) an Empi-Hurst gear stick from Big-boys toys is great value, black and chrome, about £45, it has a quick shift built in, its nice and long so you can reach it easily and really slam the gears into place, and its all spring loaded, so the stick stays in one place when in neaural, steve-T bought one and he thinks its great too
cheers

thanks for the advice
yep I will try standard oil and new gear linkage rubbers.
Does anyone know where the reverse light switch is on the gear box it's not shown in my Haynes manual
cheers

Yup, I've got one and Yup it's a vast improvement over a short stubby gear stick......which is normally what all the girls say as well - apparently..
The only down side is my ball has gone a funny shade of black.......
Now that may sound nasty Knighty, but once that bin-lid turns up, having black balls for a while will seem like a fair exchange for your life back !!!!

I agree totally. Probably be worthwhile checking the bushing in the shift box, too. That can screw up your change if it's worn.

Bob - Looking rearward, it's at the front part of the trans, just below and left of where the gear-shift shaft goes into the trans assembly - facing forward, it is. :)
Hope that helps you find it.

Thanks for that Fugepilot

Engine and Transmission Modifications
Synthetic Gear Oil: 30 minute job. If you are sick of difficult shifting when it's really cold, replace that dinosaur gear oil with a good synthetic. It will shift like butter in even the coldest temps, and give a slight increase in mileage too! If you have a new transmission, do NOT use synthetic initially (during the break in period). You can start using synthetic after your new tranny has about 6000 miles on it.

Ditto that - it's easy to learn but takes a lifetime to master.
Unlucky with the knees there dvd8n.
I'm really missing my twice daily practise :( . I just hope my ankle comes fully back on-line when the time comes.
:( :( :( I am also missing my fug cockpit. :( :( :(

Hurst will be for me
another rich person point of view don't shoot me guys just adding comment here
sandShifter: Scat makes a "Drag Fast" model that has a very small shift patter. A stock shifter can have its throw shortened with a readily available kit. A shifter box must be welded to the frame, position it after the seats are mounted.
