Title: How small can the cycle wings be ?
bobacat - October 10, 2005 07:01 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know what the acceptable size is for cycle wings is ?
Looking at Steve-T car they appear quite small. I like the way they look B)
As I don't intend to use the car much in the wet and the fact both rear cycle wings have sheared there rear mounting point.
I though I might as well replace them with something more minimal.
Minimal is always better mini skirts for instance. Anyway I digress .
Quite fancy Aluminium
This may be a question for an MOT/SVA expert ?
opinions please thanks
Bob

Perhaps a question for Fugepilot
fugepilot - October 12, 2005 04:27 PM (GMT)
You called
Not sure I'll be much help here Bob. Mine were on-ish when acquired: UVA I've always assumed.
I fitted aluminium sheet inside to strengthen/hold-togeather, hence all the rivets visible round rim. Also, fitted trim as SVA-man suggested. There is only an inch or so clearance to tyre, but passed ok.

Trim what sort? Is this for sharp edges ? I can see on you gallery photos

Spot on Bob - door trim with integral rubber tube (on edge) onto the sharp edges (purchased from Woolies).

Sorry Bob, mine came with it. I've not got a scooby where they came from. the car has had numerous short term owners as well, so no chance of back tracking...

This is all still quite fresh...
The law requires that a minimum of 1/3 circumference of the tyre needs to be covered by a mudguard / cycle guard. So roughly if you wrap your tape measure around your wheel and its 90 inch circumference, then according to the law you require a mudguard no less than 30 inchs long. Where you put it around that wheel is up to you. Width wise... side wall is ok but no thead showing. SVA will probably want some sort of beading around it because of the sharp edges.
Hope this helps :D

Did anyone see the road-legal Vanwall on Top Gear last week?
I thought that the 'tyre tread' mudguards were a really good idea - and really easy to make out of an old tyre carcase too! 'Stealth' mudguards!
Mind you, I bet the Vanwall's were bespoke moulded fibleglass ..........
Steve-T - November 30, 2005 10:28 PM (GMT)
I saw that........I think - was that the old motor with the tyre impression mud guards ?? I thought they worked really well. Mind you, must look rather funny under braking, it might give you the impression that the wheels have locked up if you look at your mud guards !!
I was waiting for the Hamster to go into his "I'm a driving God" mode again. Being a Hamster, I though his teeth looked rather yellow..........

That's the one - the reproduction 50's F1 car. I thought that they were a neat solution to the problem that you have when you really want exposed tyres and the old bill won't let you.

I have to admit to not being terribly fond of the current Top Gear team ... James May's the only one that I can really tolerate now.

Ah, if only.
Personally I blame my parent's lack of application for my life of toil and suffering ..........

post note
Mudguards are not required for the MOT but are required by law for vechiles on the road.
dvd8n - January 16, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
I believe that you don't need mudguards if you can get it registered as a tractor, but then there are other rules .........

Yes you are right...
The MOT does not require mudguards, but only on 'certain' pre 1970 vechiles and tractors. But there is a catch. If you run without mudguards, you are limited to a top speed of 30mph(!) And you can't drive out in the rain(!) I also found out that pre 1969 stuff does not need a handbrake providing you have a line-lock !!!
But a word of caution... just because it is not required by the MOT man does not make it right with the Police. This is a big big grey area and will largely depend on the guy pulling you over. I was strongly warned against taking mine off (even though they are 'quick release' ) as if they deem it unsafe / catch you doing more than 30 / catch you in the rain... its 3 points and a £60 spot fine per exposed wheel. I reasoned that driving something a little wacky would draw enough attention without being pulled for the obvious stuff too...
You can get away with a lot of stuff but I'm afriad this probably isn't one of them... :ph43r:
Noise is another funnily enough. In the MOT bible it states that the exhaust note should be no noiser than a comparable vechile, and seeing as there was no other 911 powered Fugitives in the bay, it passed! But you could hardly say it was quiet, and a certain restrain is required in town traffic..... :D

That was my reasoning too ... I tried to make everything as legal as I could seeing as a Fug is like a big 'pull me over' sign anyway.

By the way, did you know that you don't need lights if you don't go out in the dark? I decided not to push that one, either. ;)

locost wingsjust checking for the size of the rears
bobacat - April 28, 2006 06:36 PM (GMT)
still no joy with the cycle wings
re locost site no answering emails ?
any recommendation tried advertisers on ebay same thing no reply
also need some stay for the front as the ones on my Fug don't fit in the wings properly and are basically rather crude angle iron bent at 90 degrees.
They must weigh a ton!
