Title: Fuel Tank Fixings

bobacat - January 24, 2006 11:09 PM (GMT)

I have more or less decide on my new fuel tanks but what is the best way to attach this to the front chasis tubes.
I also want to drill a hole through the bonnet for a flush fuel filler.
What the best way to cut through the fibreglass?
I haven't seen any locking flush fuel fillers anyone point me in the right direction of a web site ?

Whilst on the subject do I really need an electric fuel pump and fuel regulator for my twin Dellorto IDF's

fabricate a pair of ali straps, about 2" wide, each with a rubber lining, that go over the top of the tank and gently clamp it to the chassis floor skin, try to avoid screwing into it or welding flanges to the tank, as they will eventually cause you leaks and grief.........my tank mounts are very bad, and are on my list of jobs to fix :(

errr.......as you need to transport the fuel from the front to the back of the car, yes an electric fuel pump and pressure regulator will be required..........

hole saws work well of fibreglass, but I'm thinking you will need quite a big hole saw for a fuel filler.......I think you will find that if you have a flush fit filler, the bonnet will need to be permanently in place????...........fibre glass aint very nice stuff to cut, wear goggles and gloves.......... B&Q dont sell replacement eyes :(

Exactly right. And just how I've done it - except my straps aren't that wide. But wider's probably better ............

You can see the straps that I've used in my gallery postings on page 2 - no shots of the straps exactly, but they're there in a lot of them.

I got all my bits from MERLIN Motorsports

Try www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk

:)

Make the straps as wide as possible (2 inchs plus) and mount the tank on some rubber pads or sheet to stop it rubbing. 1 gallon of fuel equates to about 10 kg in wieght so you need to secure it quite well B)

so are you saying flush mount isn't the way to go just cut a hole for the cap to poke through so to speak

My tank has a screw on cap. The bonnet has an access plate that I open up to get at it. Not saying it's the best way, but it's waterproof, cheap and relatively easy.

I could have not bothered even putting in the access plate, and just taken the bonnet off to fill up. It'd be in the VW tradition, after all ;)
