Title: gearbox shift jams up on fast changes
bobacat - February 5, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
I have problem with fast changes when actually accelerating hard.
The gear box tends to jam and not in gear.
During normal or moderate acceleration this doesn't happen.
Thoughts answers suggestions please

Sounds like knackered gearbox mounts or a loose gearbox to me. The gearbox is moving under load which is 'pitching' the gear linkage :o

I suppose I really knew it just didn't want to think about the hassle of taking the engine out to fix it.
So being a novice at this I suppose I better read up what word of wisdom Mr Haynes has to say.
Cheers Hey ho

Why don't you just buy a gearbox strap and bolt it all up firmly?
You may feel the engine a little thru the chassis but as well as locating the gearbox, it should also help to tighten up the rear suspension :P

this sounds alot easier but what are the disadvantages of doing this ?

ok I have bought some poly gearbox bushes to sort my wayward gearbox movement (hopefully). Is it just a case of unbolting and sliding the engine and gearbox out a little after detaching the gerabox linkage and anything else ?

Sorry I must have missed your earlier question.
Apart from feeling the vibes from the engine and gearbox a little more there is no disadvantage to strapping in your gearbox. In fact if you are running a swing axle then there are clear advantages as the gearbox is part of the suspension so if you can at all help it you don't want it to move about!!! Engine and gearbox is solid mounted in the frame in mine, and prior to that I ran the '67 1600 Beetle that the number plate came from for 6 years with two straps on the gearbox (front and back) ....no problems. I ripped a set of red polyurethane mounts in half in the beetle, so in the end made the front one under the nose cone out of 6mm aluminium. And added the straps, sorted !! Go for it, it will help alot B)
You will have to drop out the engine to do the back ones as they need undoing in the bell housing. Disconnect the gearlinkage and the clutch cable. Use a jack to lift the gearbox off the frame to help. Before you put the engine back in put a pair of straps on the gearbox...
Good luck :D
