Hi
i'm needing to replace my brakes, they are all drum and just seen better days. What i was wondering is, where is the best place to by this stuff? i've heard some of the places take ages to send things and wanted to avoid any problems.
Also, is going over to discs that much of a benefit concidering the weight of these things? To be honest, the cost was a bit of a put off. It doesn't help the fact i've never driven my fug,nor anyone elses. I haven't even driven a beetle come to that. Grateful for any advice.
Bob
Brakes should be no problem most shops near me carry this stock so there should be no waiting time.
You can try GSF for stock stuff they seem ok there are couple of others.
Difficult to recommend as I don't where you live ?
If it was me I would source some second hand disc's for the front at least, maybe off a VW 1303 or Porsche 924 disc drium or 944 disc all round.
Though Speak to Tigger re Porsche stuff he has done this, but from what he says the back is a straight swap off an early 944.
The front is a bit more work
Drums are pain to keep adjusted and in top form.
Rear discs I asume make MOT day alot easy aswell.
They are getting very tight on handbrake these days and they don't make as much allowance for old cars as they did :(
Discs are better at shedding water in the wet and work better off road.
I'm in sunny Clacton-on-sea, which is the end of the world regarding buying stuff locally. So more or less every thing i buy other than what i can get out of Tesco is of the net or out of magazines. Volkspares in Leytonstone have shown to be the most helpful and cheapest.
I only found them today but can easily collect from there so it's who i'll use. It was just looking through other buggy and VW forums some of these places have a bit of a bad reputation for delayed delivery. Probably order it in once they are paid as oppose to having it in stock. Which i can understand, but it doesn't help.
Clacton is not to far away organise a day of shoping at Lakeside for your significant other (extra browny points) While she does the clothes shops you do the vw shops ;) Finish with a nice meal hey presto.
Suggest you check availability before turning up especially with SSP
as they do not carry stock order for next day delivery before 2.00pm previous day
