Hi
re fitting Porsche wheels
this is what I have read
pre 86 early 944 rear disc's hubs calipers just bolt straight on
Is this correct?
What happens at the front will the front disc's go straight on?
Cal
Ok...I've done this
Pre 86 rears will bolt straight on as the pre 86 944 uses the same trailing arm as the 1303/1302 beetle. The 944 uses a cast alloy housing which is the same 4 bolt bearing housing as used on the VW swing axle and the IRS, this has a bracket off the back for the caliplier. Providing you have all the bits, it is a straight swap.
Post 86 uses a alloy forged trailing arm (this is what i used) providing you use the trailing arm complete and use the beetle inner bushes the 944 alloy IRS will marry up to the Beelte IRS brackets no problem. Go a step further and use the 944 adjustable spring plates and housings. They need work and are not straight forward, but if you need any guidance here shout cos I've been thru this too so to speak. If you do go post 90 you get the 944 S2 set up with the big black brembo brakes and vented disc's. Again this is what I've done...
The front a little more complicated. You will need to make up a plate to take the caliplier and shims / spacers will need to be made to down size the 944 disc to accept the VW wheel bearings. Alternativly I opted for a pair of dropped stub axles and got a local company to machine a new pair of spindles to accept the 944 bearings which are much bigger (stronger)
An excellent book which explains most of the alternatives out there far better than me is ' VW Beetle performance Handbook' by Keith Seume Excellent bedtime reading material B)

watch out !! not al measures are good on the adapter for caliper !!
20+20mm aren't correct... the rest is ok!
question time....do i change my front discs to get 5x130 (porsche) or just buy some adapters? the cost is about the same but i just want to have another view on the subject....i cant decide between the two....i have a full set of 924 turbo brakes now but i just want to fit the rear end for now. will get around to the front end another year. anybody used the adapters before? i am going from beetle 4x130 to porsche 5x130.
Just get the disc's re-drilled and use a spacer if necessary for now
