Title: Quicker steering
silv - June 28, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
Spotted an ad somewhere on a US web site for some sort of bolt on extender/adapter plate to the steering idler that makes the VW steering less turns lock to lock.
Anyone heard of this? Sounds useful. (If I could work out where it goes/how it works!)

Bugpack do one, you bolt it inbetween the steering box and the column
If you can't find it on their website, speak to Limited Edition as I know they are a Bugpack outlet.
Or.....stick a smaller steering wheel on for the same effect

if you find more detais about this please let me know......does anyone have a web address or phone number for limited edition???.....I used to have a 10 inch steering wheel which was near impossible to turn, and the steering was still slow.........so I fitted a 12" steering wheel, although now easier to turn, it is still too slow.........this widget sounds just what I'm looking for........let me know
I have also just bought a bump steer kit which allows the steering rack ball joints to be mounted upside-down and therefore much more horizontal tie arms, I dont expect it to totally cure bump steer, but it will be better for sure.

It is basically a metal diamond shaped plate with 4 holes that bolts on between the steering box and the pitman arm to make the pitman arm longer, therefore it takes less turns lock to lock. I would be far easier to make than wait for bugpack delieveries although I guess it is diamond shaped to keep the ackerman angles right as the pitman arm gets longer.
Bugpack ref 5570 "quick steering kit 68 and earlier"
Bugpack ref 5571 "quick steering kit 69 and later"
It does look like just another weak point on the steering which might explain the "for off road use only" warnings
VW heritage can order bugpack items but be warned, my last order from bugpack took 16 weeks to reach the Uk.

have just ordered one of the bugpack-5571 "69 and later" parts from VW heritage - who I must say were very helpfull for a £20 part! - was a special order from - so I am told it will take about 4 weeks - but I'm not holding my breath!
this will hopefully solve 2 problems for me - quicker steeering - and make the steering tie rods much more in line- therefore drastically reducing bump steer - which I have to say is quite bad on my fug-4........will let you all know how it goes.

Any update on this Knighty?
Did you get the parts ok and have they given the desired effect?
Sounds like an interesting mod. :)

thanks for the link to the Bugpack catalogue - thats the first time I have actually seen the part that I ordered!.....can now understand how it works......1 turn lock-to-lock sounds just what I'm looking for :D . havent actually recieved it - I was told 4 weeks, but I suspect it will be a tad longer than that :( ........standard bug steering is way too slow for a fug - have kerbed my fug on many occasions because of this

Have a look here too as its basically the Bugpack catalogue on line. Maybe steering rack conversion is in order if the quick steer plate doesn't fix it?

I had a mini years ago with a quick rack, coupled with a small steering wheel it literally turned into a go-cart. It took a bit of getting used to and was very odd if you then drove a normal car. It was very twitchy on fast sweeping bends. Great fun though, recommended.

Its just arrived today :D - went into the garage to offer it up to the pitman arm - and the head scratching has begun........as its from the US - and only one type is available - its now dawned on me its for a LHD car only........when you flip it over for RHD application the tapered drillings for the ball joints are on the wrong side......fook......but I have two solutions up my sleve:-
1) drill out the other side of the tapered holes with a tapered drill - so I will end up with half aof a taper - not ideal but I'm sure it will work........does ANYONE have this tapered drill size to suit the later ball joints used on a ball-joint beam?.....I have a feeling the drilling will need to be done on a vertical bridgeport type mill
2) drill out the tapered holes completley to 17mm and fit a the top-hat inserts used from a bump-steer kit.......but this will leave one area about 4-5mm thin......which is a bit too thin for my liking
does anyone have a tapered drill to suit the tie-rod ball joints that they are willing to lend me?........or know of anyone who has the tapered drill and can do the machining work for me?

Is there any chance that your local engineering firm can make a reverse version for you using the orginal as a plan?
Also coming from the states are there any non metric threads involved?
