Title: Fug2 or Fug4
Description: How can you tell?

Agent Orange - September 4, 2006 09:19 PM (GMT)
Evening

Ok so I know the practical differences between the Fug2 and 4 but with just a bare frame how can you tell the difference?

Is the frame longer/taller? etc.

If you look at the two Fugs below notice the orange ones roof line is way lower than the blacks. Is the orange one a 2 and the black a 4?

Hi agent orange

wheel base is different I beleive
fug 2 is 101"
fug 4 111"

bugpack also did a midmount 2+2 which is 117" too long :o

UVA did not produce this deriviative but did produce a 2 seater mid mounted engine from the fug 4 chasis
this was modified again for the f33.

UVA basically used the Bugpack fugitive chassis although manufactured in the UK

see here as this has the dimensions for a unmolested fug 2 chassis
fug2 dimensions

Re cockpit height there have been many frames modified to take all sorts of engines etc so it could just be a modified frame.
It's difficult to tell straight on can you post a side aspect picture ?

I don't believe anyone has posted dimensions for a fug 4 chasis

Hi,

The original UVA Fug 4 flyer I've got here has the wheelbase down as 100"

Cheers

I've measured the wheel base of the black one and it's 101" the height difference is 100mm on the tube which comes up and forward from behind the driver and passenger at an angle
You know from elbow height to above your head. ;)

look on the "members cars" section of the main page, in there you will find puicture about a green fug-4 by Thomas Arndt....click on the picture for more pics and info.......take a close look at the side rails of the bottom picture - click on it to enlarge........ when the 3 tubes intersect the rail bend just above where your arm will lie - forming an upward pointing arrow - this is the certain way to tell a fug-4........if not like this - then its a fug 2

also - on the fug 4 - there is also 2 small extra tubes reinforcing the lower windscreen area........fug-2's do not have this

therefore - from the pictures of your cars - I know the heights are different - but it looks like they are both fug-2's

I would suspect the black one is designed for more headroom with a higher main hoop and more of an agressive side angle - when compared to the low hoop and flat top of the yellow frame

also a word of advice - when building a fug-2 put the fuel tank up front - otherwise the front wheels will be light and lock up under breaking - a common problem for fug-2's - the extra weight of the front mounted tank will really help the tyres bite better

Thanks for that.

I was wondering what the truth was about 2 + 2's could this account for the extra height do you think?

Cheers for the info and based on what you say they are definately 2s. We guessed they were but the increased height of the roof on the black one made us think. Mind you I know Bugpack/UVA did offer them with increased roof heights - 3 inches?

Thanks for the tip about the light front end as that was a concern of ours. We do intend to put the fuel tank at the front and as far forward as possible. The battery box is already right at the front to add a bit more weight. The thought of making a longer custom tank at the front has crossed our minds too given more fuel capacity and weight to the front.

Any opinions on discs or drums? With the weight of the rail we're thinking drums are sufficient.

Caloun

I can vouch for problems with rear tanks and braking.
Mine has spun alloy one at rear which may look nice but doesn't help braking.

re discs.

Mine has standard Beetle disc and it does lock up but I thinks this is due to the above. Also my lead foot due to all new cars now have ABS and I suppose I have just got lazy.

If you decide to use drums the UVA build manual which can be download from
[URL=http://www.avfl84.dsl.pipex.com/library.htm]My Webpage[/URLlibray
suggests swapping the brake cylinders from the rear which are bigger bore .

I hope that helps and good luick with the builds

Cheers, i'm thinking that we'll go with brake bias adjusters to compensate for the over enthusiastic back end braking.

Should level things out a bit. :D

discs and drums does brake almost the same. but discbrakes will lose there temparature/heat better than drums....

I don't know the difference between the weight of them....

That's a good point i hadn't thought of, the weight difference.

I'll have to look into that, cheers :)
