Title: Engine/speed?

Bin 'jammin' - September 6, 2006 03:35 PM (GMT)
What sort of speed are you getting from a standard VW 1600 aircooled engine in a fug2?

caloun - November 2, 2006 09:38 PM (GMT)

ask bob he has 1600 twin port with ratio rockers and twin dells and slightly ported heads to his own design.
The internals are non standard whatever that means redline 5800 +

It felt indecently quick the other day but then it is rather minimal and low to the ground so difficult to tell just glads it now seems to stop aswell as it goes.
It stuck to road like glue wish mine did under braking :(
or may be not quite as violently
pass the brown paper bag please :(

but are you talking about top speed or acceleration ?

Bin 'jammin' - November 3, 2006 10:24 AM (GMT)
Thanks, i spose i'm asking about both acceleration and top speed really.

bobacat - November 4, 2006 01:16 AM (GMT)

"she fast enough for you old man whats the cargo"

"I have made alot of special modification "

"its a heap of junk"

hmm well that sums it up nicely.

Top speed somewhere around 115-130 i daren't look at the speedo seriously try not go that fast as isn't plesant . It runs out of gearing as stated

Acceleration fast enough for me
less than 10 easily maybe less than 8 never time it.
really depends on how good your gearchanges are
But next time my bro is down I will hook un his gizmo which can do all this stuff and let you know
don't hold your breath

 Nice touch.

Cheers for the info B)

I would have thought with a healthy 1600 you should be looking at sub 10's for 0-60. Top speed will be the same-sh though at about 75 /85 ish

Problem with a standard aircooled lump especially the type 1, unless you have a unlimited supply of crankcases you have the keep the rev's below 4,200.

Never driven a beetle, but I guess you'd run out of gears before you ran out of power. Lots of powered up or in these cases weight lightened cars used to suffer from that years ago. Just wish I was 20yrs younger so I could have had the fast stuff when I was still young enough for it to really, really matter instead of really matter. :D

that's about right bob. been blatting round in my mate's 1200 '64 bug this week and that runs out of gears at about 85 no problem at all B)

bobacat - November 6, 2006 10:25 PM (GMT)

top speed is defo over 115 but then

"I have made alot of special modification "

she run a high ratio crown wheel and its a rarer 1500 gearbox so no problemo with 1st :D

and she still spins her wheels in 1st "little bitch" B)

don't agree about 4,800 depends on lots of things imho
re case damage down to crap oil filter mesh thing and crap oil and not changing regularly
good qulaity 20/50 multigrade
and full flow with proper oil filter.
changing oil regularly
remeber this oil works hard cooling as well as lubricating

The case I agree is not as good as a Type 1V but it aint soo bad

So with a standard 1300 box with ratio of 4.375 and rear wheel o/a dia including tyre of 30" will this run out of gears and if so at what point?

cool link B)

i need to work out what a 16 valve will do......... :P

Tigger - November 7, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
bobacat,

With no counterweights and tiny main bearings held in with even smaller pins. I can assure you 4200 is your limit. Even more so on a standard cam!!!

Change the oil as much as you like, if you regarly rev to over 5k you drastically reduce the life of your case....if the bottom end is standard :(

Chicken - November 8, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)

I rev mine to 5k fairly often, like every gear change :D

My case has held out for 6 years of abuse but low mileage so I guess thats why.
Time for a new engine anyway.

100bob - November 8, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
My dad had a 72 bay window,I can remember the day he picked it up. It was brand new orange and white and I was 5yrs old. Not that that really matters,it's just the fact it used to coast until the revs dropped again when it was doing just over 80 obviously don't know whay the revs were but it was govened to that for a reason. He used to drive like that rather a lot thinking about it,bad example to me I'd say. ;)
