Title: Bodywork, mud guards and the law?
Bin 'jammin' - September 8, 2006 11:21 AM (GMT)
So i'd like to know what the law is with regards to having or not having mud guards and bodywork panels.
Anyone clued up?
garageman3000 - September 11, 2006 09:18 AM (GMT)
There is no need at all for bodywork, I think mudguards are required by law but are not covered by the MOT.
You can get away with putting a car on the road without them but it only takes one good copper to look up the right page in the rule book and you are nicked.
This is what I understand anyway, maybe someone else knows better.
gareth - September 11, 2006 09:51 AM (GMT)
my understanding is that if you have the bodywork then you also need the mudguards but if you don't use the bodywork you are free to run without the 'guards
i'd need to double check but in any case i'll be running mine with body and guards. like garageman says - one clued up copper and you're gonna get done
i also personally prefer the look of them running both nevermind the obvious wind exclusion benefits!!

forget the law and start thinking about practicality - if you want to run the absolute minimum heres what I'd do - run front and rear mudguards, a windscreen and a nose cone section - its no fun whatsoever haviong stones thrown into your eyes from other cars and from your front tyres - also the wind speed/noise at anything above 30mph is not nice either
the nosesection keeps air out too
garageman3000 - September 11, 2006 12:14 PM (GMT)
I agree, if you are going to do plenty of road miles then thinking of practicality is a must, think about what you will use it for.
I can confirm from experience that with no body or screen the flies hurt at 60 and you need ear plugs as well as glasses.
Its still great fun but you would soon get sick if doing lots of miles.
Local running about is great and really hot weather like July is fantastic, better than any cabrio or motorbike.
For everything including off road then mudguards are a must, when the front wheels turn you are going to get covered with whatever is under them.
If its wet then you get a soaking and if its dry you get shot with gravel.
What is the car going to be used for?
Bin 'jammin' - September 11, 2006 01:08 PM (GMT)
Well we will be doing a lot of european road miles over a short period of time initially, in september next year. ;)
but we want to look quite outrageous at the same time. :D
Hence the thought of going "bare" (the fug that is).
Then whatever we want after that but i would expect it to be mostly road miles in the warmer months.
Bin 'jammin' - September 11, 2006 01:13 PM (GMT)
We're thinking that some stealth mud guards with tyre print on would solve the safety and look issues.
Is there any law that says you have to have bodywork if you have mud guards?
As for stones and wind, well after years of riding motorbikes that doesnt worry me we'll mostly be wearing helmets or goggles or something of the like.

i don't think so dude. doesn't the ariel atom have mudguards? it certainly has no bodywork!!!!
Bin 'jammin' - September 11, 2006 02:05 PM (GMT)
That's true, good thinking that man. :)
Agent Orange - September 11, 2006 03:43 PM (GMT)
Stones etc. would be a pain but as already said the fug will offer more protection that a motorbike and this is my current hack....

With a bikers jacket and helmet I don't see it being too much different to riding a bike without a fairing. Our thinking with the fug is that its a 4 wheel motorbike. Stones from other road users I don't see as an issue but from the front wheels of the fug might be.
Bin 'jammin' - September 11, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
Can you see why the orange one had to be Kierons?? :D
caloun - September 11, 2006 07:54 PM (GMT)
Believe me you do get peppered by other road users  I did when showing a essex youth than his toyota supra 3.0i was no match for my fug. :D
I was spitting the gravel out for quite a while.
It was too hot to wear a helmet but may be I will wear just a motocross mask next time

I think Ben's brain is still a foaming mess from the weekend. ;)
Main reason for orange everything is the band
Agent Orange.
I'm thinking orange frame for mine with gloss black engine, black seats, black gauges and pods with diamond polish rimmed black 5 spokes. Probably back tyres too.....
Carbon fibre mud guards would be nice.

ooh sounds sweet B) B)
can't go wrong with orange :D
and heavy weekend was it boys? :D  B) ;)
Knighty - September 13, 2006 08:51 AM (GMT)
now listen very carefully boys and girls - anyone running a fug without a polycarbonale (riot shield material) or glass laminated windscreen is a bloody idiot in my opinion......if you get hit by a medium sized stone (in the head) from an oncoming vehicle - IT WILL KILL YOU.......you boys need to sit yourselves in a quiet room and think carefully about that - forget about wearing crash helmets in a fug as you will soon realise that you feel and look like a prat.
Listen to what we say as we have been there and done it - run front and rear mudguards, and a nose section with a proper windscreen - believe me, the latter will save your life one day - the fug side rails will still be well exposed, as you will not be running the side panels - it will still look wicked and minimalist - its been done before and looks way cool- a bit like the sides of an ariel atom B)
Agent Orange - September 13, 2006 09:39 AM (GMT)
I see your point Knighty and if you drive without a windscreen a stone could hit you with unpleasant results. But I can't see your logical if you compare that to a motorbike?
After all I ride a motorike with no windscreen/fairing but to protect myself I wear full leathers, gloves and a helmet with thick visor. If I wear that in the Fug I can't see it being any more dangerous that riding a bike. I can't see how wearing a helmet in a Fug would make you look a prat either? Surely its a pretty sensible thing to do?
gareth - September 13, 2006 10:53 AM (GMT)
mine came with a laminated screen and i haven't even considered not using it.
i can see the point of no screen and a crash helmet but it's not the look i wanted so windsreen it is B)
Knighty - September 13, 2006 12:13 PM (GMT)
OK so being a biker, I can now understand your OK with the power ranger look, and your OK wearing full leathers and a crash helmet in 30DegC summer heat and the associated sweaty head, ass and balls.........but I still dont think you understand about this grit and stones thing - if you run the fug open mate its gonna fill up with grit and sand in no time - and just where you dont want it - just imagine all that grit nicley imbedded into your pedal assy, gear lever, handbrake, dash dials, throttle cable - and not to mentioned wedged between every floor tube and the floor pan - on a bike it falls off - in a fug it fills up!
Bin 'jammin' - September 13, 2006 06:54 PM (GMT)
I think he looks cool with a helmet on in the atom. B)
I also think a black full face helmet in a stealth fug will look cool B) :ph43r:
What do the military wear when they're nutting about in them across all sorts of terrain in a convoy?
I don't actually know, so this isn't rhetorical. <_<
They use them as fast attack vehicles and hammer it in to the target zone in a narrow profile surely they are subjected to all sorts of sh*t flying up at them from the guys in front?
Anyone?
Bin 'jammin' - September 13, 2006 06:56 PM (GMT)
Oh, and yes it was Vanfest this weekend hence the foaming brain :D
gareth - September 13, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
ah!!! had to miss vanfest. gutted but will be there next year B)
and i think they just wear the normal kevlar bullet proof gear but i could be wrong???? seem to remember footage from iraq but not sure....it may have been a film!!!!
Bin 'jammin' - September 13, 2006 07:25 PM (GMT)
Shame it was a corker B)
Yeah i know they wear body armour but on there heads they wear those little helmets that don't cover you chin or anything and goggles i thought.
caloun - September 13, 2006 07:30 PM (GMT)
ok I admit I am as mad as a March hatter but luvin it

Yes but i still prefer desert colours B)
Knighty - September 14, 2006 08:08 AM (GMT)
so you like the black stealth look - me too - theres something about a black car that floats my boat too - heres some pics of my previous project - took me 3 years to build, and I raced it for 2 years on national race circuits with the 750 motor club in the F4 class, its bike engine Honda Blackbird powered, 170bhp in a 370Kg chassis, the car is a VanDiemen RF93 - which started life as a formula renault - and before you ask, 0-60 in less than 3 seconds - did 140 in about 6 seconds.......was doing 53 second laps around brands indy circuit - but I was still 5 seconds off the pace!.......basically sold it as it was too fast and nearly killed my self on 3 occasions due to big crashes......did a track day at donnington once and was going past supercars (porkers, ferraris, lambos, nobles) like they were milk floats.

Bin 'jammin' - September 14, 2006 10:35 AM (GMT)
Now that's rockin
Seriously nice bit of kit
OOh i've just come over all funny B)
