next up is convert the bus to diesel power and THEN i can start the fuge
in my defence i have also been learning to weld so i'll be looking to do as much work on that myself as i can ;)
Bin 'jammin' - January 23, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)

welding - my best bit of advice with a mig welder is use the correct gas........avoid pure CO2 (carbon dioxide) like the plague, no matter how cheap you can get it, if your mate has a truck load of CO2 pub-gas bottles for free - DONT USE IT!!!!!!........you want whats termed argo-shield..........which from BOC is about 95% CO2 and 5% argon.........or if you buy it in the small disposable bottles from your local auto-store its about 60% CO2 and 40% Argon, but it still works fine........if you use pure CO2 the welder is a pain in the ass to set up, and the weld will be full of micro-cracks, god knows why they still sell it as a shielding gas........as soon as you weld with the CO2 & Argon mix stuff you will never use pure CO2 ever again........I wish someone told me that when I started welding!.....oh yeah - always cover your arms, dont wear a T-shirt otherwise you risk a bad sun tan that will do you no favours if you know what I mean :( ......best of luck ;)
gareth - January 25, 2007 08:13 PM (GMT)
thanks for the advice knighty B) (esp. about the sunburn - my mate learnt the hard way when he holed one of his gloves and burnt his hand. ouch!)

I'd certainly agree with that,it's not worth using pub gas. That said,if ya use pub gas and ya weldings nasty you've got something to blame. :D You could use the right gas and pretend it isn't to hedge your bets. :D :D I was tought by someone who had been a factory welder for many years, trouble is he used to automatically set power and wire speed for me. Meaning I could weld to a reasonable standard but far better if he'd set it,I've never really been able to gage it as well as he could do instantly. Seriously good welding mask should be bought at any cost.

more top advice! cheers bob! B)
got one of those ones that you can see through but goes dark when the sparks start.....something to do with LCDs? can't remember what it's called  i'll have a look when i'm back in the shed tomorrow B)
lovely piece of kit though B) ;)
Bin 'jammin' - January 26, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
A few points i would like to add ;)
1- Never wear contact lenses when near active welding (they fuse to your eye)
2- Always make sure you have a good earth
3- Weld area must be clean and free of paint etc
4- Have a working fire extinguisher handy
5- Clear the immediate area of flamable stuff (sparks fly!)
6- Get practicing dude!
100bob - January 26, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
I couldn't remember what they were called either  Best thing invented since the mig welder though. My stick welding with an old style mask would have been worthy of a job at kwik-fit,nowhere else though. :D I'm great at useless advice and totally pointless opinoins shold you need any. B)
steve_vfr - January 30, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
My 2 cents worth –
2 minutes of removing paint and rust from the area where you will weld (say within 2-3cm of where you will weld) will save you 10 mins of cleaning up where it didn't weld nicely.
Practise with clean metal and metal with paint on/damp rust and will just see how much nicer it welds.
-oh and welding upside-down is slow and always painful!
:D
