Title: headlamps not working
Knighty - February 17, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
spent today making some fancy brackets for my new pair of 3.5" headlamps, and I must say they look just right on top of the shock towers........got some new spax double adjustable front shocks too, and I must say they look fine in yellow!
but I have a major, major electrical problem  .....which I'm going to lose sleep over........I have left the old lights wired in, flicked on the ignition, fired the engine up, side lights - OK......dipped beam = indicators come on (not flashing)........ main beam = indicators on harder (not flashing).......the headlamp bulbs are doing nothing whatsoever.......and when I put the main beam on via pulling back on the indicator arm, it just puts the side lights on :( ........and - no - I havent wired the headlamps into the indicators - the wirings all original........oh fugging hell - why now
I have took the details off the side of the 5 blade relay, as thats my main suspicion at the moment, am hoping vehicle wiring products will come up trumps there - .......do they fail?..........checked all fuses and they are OK.........the bulbs look fine, the 3 position headlamp switch seems OK........does anyone have any ideas?.......any long shots much appreciated

Sounds like a bad earth ?

Yep...check your earths. :ph43r:

Yep the earth that should be from your headlights/side lights/indicators at the front isn't getting to the frame where it previously did.
Headlamps have 55/60 watt bulbs = 5A per bulb or 10A when you flash someone (both fillaments on) so to get full brightness and not warm up the wires, I'd not use a long run of thin wire.

Bailey, Tiggar & Steve - you da men........I ran back out into the garage yesterday to check the earths, I ran an earth from the chassis to the common wire on the headlamp bulbs and side lights........bloody heypresto!.......now have side lights and full beam.......dipped beam is yet to do anything, but I,m confident that can be fixed with an earth as I ran out of time.......I think when I replaced the front beam last summer I must have missed some earth wires........as the indicators are ticking faster than normal, so I think they need an earth too!.......thanks again!.........am well pleased with the bates style streetfighter headlamps - look the nuts!.........will post a pic when finished.

hello knighty, just to confirm that myself and my son will be at stoneleigh for both days,camping-though i will probably be towing the fugitive down on the back of my other kit car,as this gives us lots of room for tent etc, look forward to meeting you and other like minded peeps.

Check to see you have not got any frayed cables, if any of the lives are touching each other you will have all sorts of things happening. in my wiring kits i have an earth block and all the earths come back to one common earth, that way it eliminates alot of problems.
