Title: Indicators ticking fast?....

Knighty - March 17, 2007 08:47 PM (GMT)
Have noticed my indicators are ticking fast, the earth to the 3 pin ticker relay is fine, I have recently put two new indicator units up front, each with 4w bulbs.......I have a feeling the rear indicator bulbs are about 10 - 20w........the relay is rated to about 22w for 4 bulbs.......is there any way that the new low wattage front units could be causing problems for the ticker relay?.........I'm gonna buy a replacement relay from halfords and try that.......any suggestions much appreciated!.......is fast ticking an MOT failure?

Indeed the lower wattage bulbs will make the relay tick too fast.
The theory being that if there is less load on the relay, it is probably because a bulb has gone and you would want to know about it.

I had this trouble with aftermarket indicators on a motorbike.
I solved it buy putting one of the old (and now unused) indicators between the wire to the left indicator and the wire to the right indicator and stuffed it out of sight under the seat.
When I indicate either way with glows dimly, but draws enough power to keep the relay happy.
Other option is to get higher wattage bulbs I guess.

p.s. what you doing with the old front beams? do they need a home?

cheers steve, as I suspected!.........I'll look for some new higher wattage bulbs, failing that I'll wire in another like you describe, I'll see what the rear bulbs are first!.....

or I suppose I could wire in some ballast resistors......if I had some!

OR!.......I mistakenly ordered 4 indicators, I could place the other 2 on the side of the fug which wouldnt hurt.

the reason I changed the old beam was because it was well rotten - threw it in a skip about a year ago!

My Fug came with ballasts fitted to the front indicators.

As Steve says it's hitting a lot of bikers as people move to LED lights.

These on Ebay are similar to those fitted to mine.

Been having a look at this again as I'm looking at LED rear lights. Looks like there's now a better alternative in the form of flasher relays that can handle LEDs or other low wattage lamps and are a direct replacement for the original relays.

You can see one at the bottom of the page here

Looks like with one of these it's possible to run LEDs or other low wattage lights without having to resort to ballasts or other kludges.

Prices run from £20ish down to £5 on ebay - search on "electronic led flasher" - I can't add a direct link from work!
