I know aluminium front axles for the type 1 are made and I'm guessing they must make aluminium arms for the IRS rear end. Reason for this is I didn't realise quite how heavy the front axle actually was. Is it necessary for weight distribution or is it just weight for the sake of it? I'm not ready for doing wishbones yet,it's taking me too long to get it done as it is. Reckon I'll do it and put a steering rack in at the same time, but for now is alloy the answer?
use alloy in front if you want a wheelie machine...
it will reduce your weight indeed. but I think it will get a more worse handling or braking ..
and as far as i know, for the rear you can't buy alloy arms. only use the 944turbo/s2 arms. but they have more weight then orig. beetle arms.
Interesting B) I might just run two different axles depending on what I'm intending on doing. It really is pretty quick to change if I keep the other axle complete with steering box and brakes! Four bolts and bleed the brakes, mad or ingenious
be careful here - theres aluminium and theres aeronautical grade aluminium, most automotive grades are cheap stuff, hence to get the equivalent strength of a steel part, they need to use more of it, hence the equivalent parts are normally much heavier - alloy wheels are a classic example.......magnesium alloy wheels are much lighter - but more expensive........theres nothing wrong with good old steel.......I'm not surprised to hear the porsche alloy IRS arms are heavier
