Title: Gearbox mountings

Paul - May 17, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
Hi All,

Well as the 1st stage of getting the car back on the road I went to try and get my newer gearbox in on Sunday, the old one having pretty crap synchro on 2nd gear.

As some of you who met me at Stoneleigh will have guessed this is leading onto some questions !!!!

The old (AH coded) gearbox has a mounting plate.
The newer (AT coded) gearbox is missing it's mounting plate.

The mounting plate from the AH won't fit the AT. It has 2 bolts in a different pattern to where 3 bolts would attach to on the AT.

So can I use the AT box in the Fug at all? If so what do I need to swap over, change or get hold of?

Cheers

Paul

If you need a bracket welded up and can discribe what you want, then let me know and I'll knock one up.

I remember a friend a long time ago having a similar problem but can't remember how it was sorted! Acording to Keith Seume's VW performance handbook you either modify your frame or get a nose cone & some other bits & bobs from a pre 68 T2.
Have a look at that book untill some other dub heads come along to point you in the right direction. ;)

you can just swap the "noses" of the gearboxes.

just bolt them both off, and compare them. did it also.

and b.t.w. only for the "old" 2bolts mounting you can get the urethane-mounts..

Ta for all the replies everyone.

Rutger : That sounds like excellent news. This weekend involved mostly non Fug related projects - Will take a look soon though and report back!!

Cheers

Paul.

now sorry to throw a cat among the pigeons.......this is advice based on both personal experience, and from vw gear-box drag racing legend Peter Englozes from cog-box........

dont fit the urethane shite, no matter how fancy/racey you think it sounds, neither to gearbox mounts, or any other part of your fugitive, its crap..........fit standard black rubber vw mounts........the urethane stuff is way too hard, and in a very short space of time, it will become brittle, crack up and things will start to go very wrong........the standard black rubber stuff might sound boring and dull, but its designed for a bit of "give".........solid mounted engines and gear boxes are for race cars only, and they are grief if not done correctly, believe me........been there done it, got the t-shirt on both race and road cars :(

it's allright knighty..

but..

bit of "give".........

but with drifting or burnouts, my engine shakes a lot with old rubbers.. with urethane not.
this is mine personal experience.

I also think there is a difference between the swingaxles and IRS.
because with swingaxles your gearbox is a part of your suspension. mention the sideway forces on your axles. and yes, then it would be way more worse if they brake/crack.

and there a more types of urethanes.. some are stronger with alloy/metal inserts again cracking....

and with my last comment,

it was just about IF you want to use the urethane, you need the old 2-bolt mounting. didn't said he has to

but now you said it, i will check the urethanes some times more. ;)

Hi Rutger, I agree with what you say......I think the conclusion is there is good urethane.......and there is bad urethane which is way too hard.......some of the bush systems available from companies like powerflex are not too bad........the stuff I hate is cheap taiwanese crap from EMPI.......yukky horrible stuff  ........hows the engine re-build going?

Tigger - May 23, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
Yep! the nose cones are interchangeable.

Agree with Knighty and rutger

In my experience the US made mounts are rubbish, better to buy OE VW rubber ones and then fit a front and back gearbox brace, keeps everything tight without knocking your fillings out :D

Ta all.

Franken-gearbox created tonight.

I also couldn't previously seem to be able to select gears on the newer AT box that's going in, but with a bit of reading up and resetting of the fork selectors to the correct neutral position before swapping the nose cones it nows seems fine.

Need to get new mounting rubbers and a new nose cone gasket and then can try it in the car! Good job megabug aren't far from me - I see a Saturday trip coming up.

Cheers

Paul.

maybe I'm going to create a Franken-box too.. its the porsche 901 4 speed box, with a wayyyy tooo long 4th gear..

so I'm going to add a 3th and 4th gears from the 5-speed... :ph43r:

it will make a loonggg 1th, long 2th gear, and then a close ratio 3th and 4th..

and the engine rebuild is going well, only need the inlet-valves. will post some pics in my thread soon.

I trial fitted the gearbox into the car last week and was pleasantly surprised to find that I could get all the gears :D

Last weekend was (literally) a bit of a washout, but I managed to
  • Pick up some of the bits in needed (gearbox coupling, new front and rear gearbox mounts and a new release bearing).
  • De-rust and then paint a few areas near the gearbox that I won't be able to get to easily once it's in.
  • Wire wheel the gearbox as I plan to paint it before it goes in.

More to follow ....
