Title: Towing A frame
gmacz - June 8, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas for a UVA "A" frame.
I have a picture of one with 3 couplings and the towballs were on the UVA.
Is anyone using one of these and how are the towballs fitted to the UVA.Lastly what length did you make the A frame.OR has anyone got this A frame for sale or any other suitable A frame.Yours Gmacz

Send FUGEIAN a personal note to get his attention.......he has kitted his fug-4 with the necessary brackets for a towing A-frame, as he tows it behind his quantum to all the kit shows.......ask for some pics and look at what he's done before you do anything, as I seem to remember him saying fitting one to a fug was not as straightforward as you'd think

Don't know if it was somewhere on this site or not,but I did see a Fug where they'd put a towing hitch on the front axle, really doesn't look to bad. All they done then was whip the front wheels off and lift it on to the tow ball. Reckon a Fug is the only thing you could sensibly do it with though. To quote the obvious,if you have an 'A' frame you have to have it with you to use it,heavy, bulky and something you've got to keep you eye on at a car show or wherever or stick it in the boot. Not to mention you've got to either make or buy it. I'd fit one on mine for emergencies etc. but I have a baja type bumper thing.

Thanks for the replies.I had already purchased the parts before the first reply came through.I never thought of using the fug as a type of trailer.I suppose this would get you past the A frame towing legislation.I was planning to fit 2 two balls on the front bumper and join this with 3 couplings to the towing car.I do not know if the bumper is a standard fitment

Difficult to tell from the pick how strong it'd be. A Fug is very light but I'm sure it would still gather some mementum if the 'A' frame pulled the front bumper off :( Imagine trying to fill that one out on the insurance claim form. Still that said I've never fitted one so can't really say,I'd like the front axle involed somewhere, but I think I'd do some emailing to the scorr club who it seem frequently tow them like that.

It may actually be easier to remove the bodywork to expose the front beam.
When towing a Fug 2 back from Leicester we fabbed up a 'A' frame to mount directly to the original four beam bolt holes that would normally connect the beam to the original Beetle floorpan head.
Just used some box steel and welded up a A frame and bolted to the beam using standard Beetle beam bolts.
The only thing we would have done differently is to sleeve the bolt holes made in the A frame.

I bought a standard beetle A frame from Big Boyz Toyz in West Thurrock, only mod was to grind off a couple of flanges. Fits straight on the axle without removing anything off the Fug, works a treat, cost about £70 :D
