Title: Seat to pedal distance.
gmacz - August 17, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
I am 6ft 2" and need to move the pedal box forward.
I was hoping someone about this size would be able to measure the distance from the front edge of a uva original seat and the pedals. It is difficult to guess the length without removing the pedal box.The tank is in front of the pedal box and will need to be moved or replaced depending on the area left in front of the pedal box.
I was hoping to work out the problems before I started the job.Yours Gmacz

You won't have a problem,I'm 6'4" and I've got the fuel tank in the front of mine. I've got a custom pedal box and also a mk1 Golf master cylinder as it's shorter to gain more space. I have original UVA seats and although it's snug I can comfortably sit in it. My technique of getting in and out is't too cool,I'm not sure what is the best way yet, because of my height the distance from my foot to knee makes it a real problem. I can't measure the distance for you as my seats are away being upholstered,I can do it when they are back or I'll look at the brackets and make a guess. All I can say for sure is you will be able to do it.

Thanks for the reply.Do you have the standard fitment steering assembly.I think I would prefer the steering column to stick out further than it does at the moment. The problem is I dont know what it feels like without having my knees wrapped around it. I can only get 1st and 2nd gear, as my knee is in the way of 3rd and 4th, does this problem disappear when you get your legs in properly.I think what I am really asking is --When moving the pedals forward does that allow you to fully use all the rest of the standard equipment without any more mods.Plan is to use it as a limited use vehicle - no MOT and free car tax, just need insurance. This gives me enough road use to get to the beach etc. Yours Gmacz

You don't have to rely on the clutch being down so that you knee is out the way on the gear change,it does help if I'm honest though. I did have to move the steering colum over a little to the right, but I still have enough room for my hand to comfortable fit past the side of the frame. I've got a fairly small steering wheel too. I've got pics of it in the forum gallery if it helps. To get some perspective, It's a lot more awkward for me to drive a fair few "normal cars" than it is a Fug. Knees and elbows are a problem with cars in general,it's always seat right back and the door always seems too close. :(

Finally in the workshop and about to move the pedal assy. Looks as though I will need a new tank. My one is in the way of the pedals and is the full width of the frame.I may be able to slide it a couple of inches forward, but this will not be enough.I think a tank that would fit in front of the passenger footwell and sitting in the same position would be the easy solution. I should be able to come up with a way of extending the clutch and throttle cables.Uva seats have been modified to make the back of the seat in a more upright position, by the original owner. I think it is a case of tank and pedals removed along with the wooden panel behind the pedals and stick your legs in and measure. Yours Gmacz

Remember you can use a golf master cylinder,it's a lot shorter and a bit more powerful. I had to do this on mine as the new tank runs right accross now. I've also got a brand new 1303 beetle master I bought for it but never fitted because of this if anyone's interested, just make me an offer.

Tank, battery box all removed. Looks like I may be able to slide the tank forward and give me more legroom. Going to move the gearstick back as far as it will go, but still be comfortable to use.Master cylinder will fit under the tank as the tank is in a raised position. Also thinking about moving the seat frame further back, this will mean chopping the metal behind the seat. I will check to see if the tank movement gives me enough room first. Wooden dashboard needs to be moved or made thinner, as it is in the way.Tank had 25 litres of petrol still left in it. :D Thanks to the previous owner for that.Yours Gmacz

Don't understand, the tubes behind my seat are not altered and the front's not too different. Point to this being, I'm 6'4", I won't pretend it's spacious, but it's drivable. I do have a bit of a problem if I have a largish passinger due to shoulder/elbow width, that's about it though.
