Title: Wet weather gear - solutions
viking - April 27, 2005 06:26 PM (GMT)
I dont have any (yet), but I reckon I will have some thoughts once I get my fug within arms reach.
In the mean time it would be very interesting to hear what solutions that people have come up with to combat the elements. Either as pictures, description, or both ;)
If you are having problems posting a picture, then PM me, and I will see what can be done.
I have seen the pics of Adrian Barrett's Fugitive 4, and its nice hood, and it is "stuff" like this that I am keen seeing more of :)
And as you prolly already know, with a fug, everything goes :)

Hi Viking,
okay so I am him of whom you speak...the weather gear on my machine was made up by a professional upholsterers way back - 1991ish I think, the pictures on fugitives.co.uk date from 1998, it worked pretty well, if you gaffer taped it from the screen around the A pillar tube - otherwise it leaked like the titanic. After a rebuild in 1999 I decided to ditch the windscreen so the weather gear is now surplus to requirements...it is still in my garage...if anybody wants it I will sell it, it was made for my 4 but as manufacturing tolerances on fug's seem to be a bit hit and miss I'd imagine it would be tailoring to fit...
cheers! Adrian.

Hi Adrian
I did not realise that the weathered up Fugitive was the same as the Le Mans car.
I was at Le Mans back in 1992, and all I can say is that if you are going to see one Car race in your life, go see Le Mans ;)
I sent you a PM, as that weather gear is likely to prove very useful for me if you still want to part with it. It is likely to be a valuable asset when I drive it back to Norway :D
Cheers
Tom

Hi Viking - you have mail....
couldn't agree more about Le Mans, went in 1997 and not missed one since, how about a summer trip in your Fug next year - Norway to LM!
I have a target for the races in my life, the Le Mans box is ticked, as is Monaco ('98 when Hakkinen won), now only have to do the Sebring the 12 hours, the Indy 500 and of course the Paris-Dakar! 92 wan't that the Herbert Mazda year - saw the car at Goodwood Festival of Speed a while back - what a sound!
If we have until mid may when you are over I am sure we can do something with the weather gear...
cheers! Adrian.

Hi viking - mine came with orig UVA rain-hood (I think) held on with press-studs
(see posted pics). Ok if rain not too heavy, otherwise comes in along top of screen
at 60mph. I'm in the process of using a carbon-fibre/kevlar/carbon-fibre
sandwich to construct a hard-cab - which I'm determined WILL be water tight.
The only drawback is storage aboard if the sun comes out on route.
I haven't quite finalised the plan yet - like do I want clap-hand, chicken-flap
or gull-wing doors - it can be a lol doing it your self. <_<

@ Le Mans Man
Well, I will prlly not be able to make Le Mans this year, but next year I am very keen on going there, and of course meet up. Sounds lieka lot of fun :D
I will send ya a Pm in regards to weather gear.
@Fugepilot
Yeah I saw the pics of your hood. I also have a Mini Moke, and its top is really amazing in terms of keeping the water drops on the outside of the car. Might have to look at that for "ideas"
In terms of making a "hardtop" of sorts, I am also doing doodles, trying to figure out how it could work/look. I reckon it will be easier to come up with some plans/ideas, once I have the car ;)
In the mean time it would be great if you would like to share some of your ideas :D
Cheers

I did some quick and dirty work in Photoshop:

and

Once I get my car back home, I will try and do a 3d mock up of it (I make computer games for a living, hence have some 3d capabilities), and try and see if that helps for ideas :)

Be glad to share any ideas as and when I get any good ones. ;)
Just now I have the kevlar, carbon-fibre and someone who
knows how to make the sandwich.
Otherwise, I spend hours over pics of my fug: imagining different
approaches and how to actualise them.
Plan A (still favorite) is to put on hood, cover with cling film and do the
sandwich thing: blob style. Then, cut-out doors, windows (perspex fill
planned) and be clever and accurate with seal-choice and fitting, respectively.
One of the more crazy plans I still can't quite let go of, Plan B involves many
more seals and cleverness to achieve a flat-pack storage capability for the
hood: comprising the interlocking geometric 2D shapes to enclose fug upper
framework.
Also, as it's not unusual to have two in the back seats, I toyed with the idea
of a hinge across above rear window to enable it to double, when in raised
position, as a screen for the brave but buffeted rear passemgers.
I know....really crazy, but you did ask. :)
Anyway, will keep you posted.
