Title: Tires
Description: Any Opinions

100bob - September 27, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
Just dropped my wheels off for blasting and powder coating, the wheels I wanted were going to cost £640 plus the tires and I really couldn't justify that. I'll be happy with the originals looking new again though. Anyway, what I was wondering was does anyone have an opinion on tire sizes and tread patterns? I want it to have the off road look and to a degree capability, but also have a reasonable on road performance. It had 195x15 on the front and 30x9.5 on the back when I got it. Once the wheels and tires are back on it's finished :D Just ready for it to be too cold to use it. :( Think I'm happy with it, I wanted it to look Mad Max,tatty and extreme when I started, now it looks like it's pretty much brand new, don't know yet if that's a good thing. seems a shame to get it dirty.

do a web search fro "colway" rally tyres, I think FUGIAN runs them on his fug-4 and they are great off and on road.......as you'd expect as they are professional rallying tyres!........deffo look the part

100bob - September 28, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
Don't do it, Colway are cheap remoulds,a customer of mine had a set on a Dihatsu to tow his boat up the beach. Worked fine until one blew out and rolled it over on the A120. I do agree they look the part and they are very cheap, but I'd never use them on anything other than maybe a Suzuki sj for a bit of off roading or non-events. Have a look at some when they're off the rims and all will become clear.

My next set of tyres will be cheap remoulds, but i will keep my BFG TAs for road use. Given the weight of the car remoulds arent too bad but they still make me nervous as I rumble along the motorway.

With IRS the tyres stay flat to the road to something with offset lugs is still quiet on the road. Beetle IRS up to 9.50 on the rear, I have a camper gearbox and 31.10.50r15 still work fine.

My next rear tyres will be

and fronts

Yes they are heavy but as all my offraoding involves landrover tracks, my speed is limited by my groundclearance and big tyres roll over everything so much better.

If you dont want remoulds then BFG MTs are still great tyres, and trac edge on the fronts maybe.
Good to see you fug finished!! Take it offroad and show up some landys before choosing your tyres

Chicken,
You won't believe this, but I'd come up with the same combination from the same company. I've used Bronco for wheel and tire packages on 4x4's I've had in the past, their service and prices, particularly for packages is great. I really do wonder what that tire choice would be like on a wet road though, through the mud definatly,on the road not so sure. I do think you're doing the right thing having two sets, best of both that way. I'm edging towards "Falken AT" presently, 235x75 on the back and 195x80 on the front as I'll only have one set I must compremise. Reason for this choice is they're a pretty chunky looking tire but more to the point they do both sizes with the same pattern and loads of white lettering round the walls. I know I should have grown out of this mattering, but it still does :D

Dont compromise on the tyres, so called dual use are pants in mud, and only being rear wheel drive you may need something more aggressive on the rears.
Saying that my current rear tyres arent too bad in the mud, but the fronts are useless as getting out of landrover ruts is a nightmare. The anacondas I had on a disco were the nuts, the only real downside to them was the noise. Cant get these in a 15" so still tempted with super swamper boggers, but then bead locks are a must.

Anyway Falken ATs look good, but with a 15" on the front maybe a bigger rear tyre. Personnal preferance but fugs dont look right without bigger rear wheels, and as to white lettering, it will wear off soon enough!

I tend to favour black and round ones.....my Fug has got some cheap ones at the front, 185/70/14's I think, budget ones, not remoulds though, stick pretty well, but no weight on them so no surprising, understeer in higher speed corners. Rear's are the 205/70/15's that were on the car when I got it (in 1990!) they are mud and sand pattern remoulds and hard as nails, offer no grip to speak of and slide whenever you touch the throttle and the steering at the same time, have used them on green lanes and fields without and drama's. Will get around to replacing them one day....

OK so this post is probably not that useful, I know more about bikes tyres - oh yeah but I did just put some pretty serious enduro tyres on my XT600e, which whilst I have owned it has never been off road and not really likley too!

cheers! Adrian.

HELLO EVERYBODYPEEPS,HERES MY MONEYS WORTH,THE COLWAY RALLY TYRES I HAVE ALWAYS RAN SINCE OWNING MY FUGIE (6 YEARS)ARE RED SPOT RALLY TYRES WHICH WERE REPLACED DUE TO TREAD WEAR ONLY WITH THE OTHER PAIR FROM THIS SET,GOOD ON/OFF ROAD TYRES,NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH EM.THE REARS I RUN ARE 31.50 X 15 MARSHALL RADIAL POWERGUARD TYRES,THESE HAVE WHITE LETTERING MOULDED IN WHITE RUBBER WHICH NEVER RUBS OFF,THESE REAR TYRES ARE ONCE AGAIN NO LONGER AVAILIABLE,BUT MARSHALL DO PRODUCE AN EQUIVILANT TYRE IN THEIR CURRENT RANGE,AND THESE COST 55.00 EACH 7 MONTHS AGO AT MY LOCAL TYRE STOCKIST.IF YOU ARE USING YOUR FUGITIVE ON THE ROAD A LOT IT IS WORTH CHECKING ALL 4 CORNER WEIGHTS,TOGETHER IF POSS,WITH DRIVER IN THE CAR,YOU MIGHT JUST GET A SURPRISE.IN THE DRY MY FUG WILL BE NEUTRAL TO SLIGHT UNDERSTEER GOING INTO A CORNER AND NEUTRAL TO SLIGHT OVERSTEER COMING OUT OF A CORNER,IN THE WET THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE GREATLY INCREASED-ITS CALLED FUN,HAVE SOME!

I've finished up with Kumho's the tread is really cool looking, not to mention functional and the back matches the front as well. 235/75/15 and 195/80/15. I run Kumho on my road car and I'm more than happy with them, not to mention I'm running far more power through them than my 2ltr Fug ever could. The Kumho's on my Fug have only just come out in these patterns and sizes and I think their worth a look. ( camskill tires ) and as a bonus with all 4x4 type tyres their cheap. I know tyre opinions will always vary due to experiences and applications, there is chance in anything that's manufactured that it will fail. I'll put a pic on soon. Fug is finished now, which almost seems a shame, haven't even driven it properly yet, I've had it just under 2yrs and don't think I could cope with the dissapointment if it drives like !$^&

100bob,

If its any concelation I felt exactly the same the moments leading up to the first test run. The fact it actually ran like a crock of sh#te is neither here or there, cos I still loved it and with a little fettling its now brilliant. Stick with it, develop it and then enjoy it. It will be 1000% better than anything you could buy off the shelf, its uique and its yours..... :P

fugieian - November 6, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
JUST TO REINFORCE TIGGERS COMMENTS,THESE CARS ARE A WELL PROVEN DESIGN,STICK WITH IT AND YOUR EFFORTS WILL BE REWARDED,AS WITH ANYTHING,MINOR NIGGLES CAN BE SORTED AND GOING OUT IN IT IS SUCH A BUZZ,YOULL KNOW WHEN YOUVE GOT THAT FUGIE FEELING,COS YOULL SMILE.

100 bob, any chance of seeing some pics of your fug with its new boots?

100bob - November 7, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
I will get something posted sometime over the next week or so, then it'll look exactly as it will when I start using it properly.

im running 33 x 12.50 x 15 kumho radial powergaurds on the rear of mine and they are reasonable for on on off road, must admit when it gets very slippery off road i lose traction but i think alot of that is the power to weight ratio thing! fronts are 26 x 8.50 x 14 kelly safari minis and they are fairly good on and off road. in the wet on road the front do slid a bit under braking though but again theres no weight on the front of mine as the fuel tank is in the rear.

streetfighterfug4 - November 8, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)
hi guys, i know i run a different set up to everyone else on my fug4, but i run 285/55x18 Toyo's on the back, and 195/50x15 Toyo t1r's on the front, and i must say they are sticky as hell, :)
