Title: Steering lock/stops.

I was just wondering what is the standard way for restricting the steering lock.On one side the tyre is gouging the bodywork and on the other side, the arm is hitting the frame. Moving the steering box slightly will stop the arm hitting the frame, this will then allow the wheel on the other side to gouge the bodywork. On the steering box there is a little arm which I will restrict by welding plates either side. Is there another way of doing this. The steering damper looks as though it might help with restriction. mine just has an adjustable bolt either side of the steering box arm,at least I'm pretty sure that's how it works,I'll check on that  It's pretty simple anyway, your right though it would have enough range without stops to do some proper damage if you turned it too far while driving.

If you rotate the steering box you will put your tie rods at funny angles and this will effect the steering. On the front beam on the side where the steering box sits there should be a bracket with a bolt in it locked off with a nut. This comes against the steering arm and stops the wheel rubbing on the body work. Obviously set up for a beetle this will need ajusting. If this is missing I suggest you do something similar? :D

I have a beam with this funny bracket and a beam without.
Can post a photo if you like.

Thanks for the replies.
Was the funny bracket a half-moon curvy thing.
Managed to get restrictions on the steering using the above bracket with a bolt with a 45 bend in it.On the other side, I used a longer bolt and two nuts in the top UVA axle clamp. This just comes to rest against the steering box arm.Shifting the steering box an inch to the left gave me full wheel movement. :) Yours Gmacz

had the same problem with mine, cured it by fitting a 25mm long piece of fuel pipe ,cut down one side over the steering damper and securing in place with two jubilee clips, lasted 7 yrs of mild abuse so far.
