Title: Type 2 Transaxle
Description: fitting a stronger van transaxle

Has anyone here fitted their fugitive with a transporter gearbox? If so, what issues did you have? In particular:

What did you do about axles? I know that the van transaxle is wider.

What type can you use? You see a lot on e-bay. A lot of them seem to be a similar shape, but what will bolt up to a type 1 engine?

Yes, the fug I brought to Germany first is fitted with a busbox. The owner and I built them up from rail. It has bug-axles fittet with 100mm diameter bus CV-joints but at the inner sides only. That means to widen the splines-area for two millimeters, if I remember right. Then you can secure the joint with the factory clamp. A friend of mine did it without that but with a little welding  . Only one MIG-point to secure. And it goes for years!!! Another way is to use VW-181-thing axle-stubs and axles. They have bus-joints and modified bug-axles, that makes them strong but expensive also. The box Is mounted without rubber-mounts in selfmade steel-mountings. any questions, feel free to ask! Cheers

What type of gearbox was it? Type 2? Type 25? Something else?

It is a 1.7 box from an early Typ2 2nd generation (68-79). And that is what you have to look for, shift rod on the box-front-nose and drive flanges for the CV's. The differences in ratio are small. If it comes from a 2.0 the first 3 gears are a little longer. I can give you the identification keys, if you want. If you have a chance to try Porsche 924 parts, the early steel (non aluminum) trailing-arms with drums or disks, stub-axles and drive-axles should fit (with a little change in bolting them together). Cheers
