Title: Wheels
Description: Which ones fit?

Stairlift bloke - December 10, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
Hi all, I'm thinking of using 4x4 alloy wheels with normal road tyres.
are adapters available for most common wheels or should I be looking for a particular PCD?
oh I have 4 holes.
I'm still new to this so any help would be much apreciated

I've been through this and in the end just got my original wheels blasted and powder coated. The choice of wheels, without paying really serious money,is very limited generally because they're too narrow. Changing hubs appeared to be the easiest option, I didn't think re-drilling drums to be a good idea. It's a bit of hassle, but if I'd given it some thought I'd have done this before buying all VW braking. Don't mean to sound negative and they're are a few adaptors out there, but not what's actuall needed. Having them made is probably going to be really dear and they'd be heavy.

Thanks Bob, so is drilling the hubs viable as it seems to be the cheapest way?

I ment change it from the stub, I didn't really word that well  . Drilling stuff isn't always a bad thing, each application needs to be looked at individually. I think if I had to build a Fug again, I'd chuck the whole VW braking system and put proper modern disc set up on. I don't think it'll be long before mine has wishbones on the front, steering rack and some vented discs. I guess it what you get used to with braking, these things are pretty basic, I don't even like driving without ABS so mines become a bit of a learning curve. :(

Just watch out for the offset dimensions, try to stick a 6" rim on the front and you will either lose your steering lock or end up with more than 1" spacers.

It is possible tho, you can buy blank drums and discs which you can tap and drill, but as Bob says, VW brakes arent that good whatever you do with them.

Thanks for the info, I think I will keep it simple now. I was thinking of having really big rims on the back 22" or bigger, but if one goes pop out in france I'll be stuffed.

Standard aircooled VW 4 stud is (4 x 130mm) PCD (pitch circle diamenter) so if you drew a circle thru the centres of the 4 holes it would be 130mm dia. Sorry if you knew this already..... ;)

So... most modern stuff out there now is either; 4 x 100 / 4 x 112 / 5 x 100 / 5 x 112

meaning providing the centres clear ok, the aircooled hubs will re -drill ok for any of the above.

I've just converted a set of rear aircooled 4 stud drums to accept a set of VW Golf 17 inch alloys so I know this works.

The thread for the bolt holes is M14 x 1.5 pitch

Hope this helps B)

If you want a cheap / quick fix I have two 255 x 15 BFG's that look newish, mounted on a tattyish set of white modulars that will bolt straight on after a coat of paint.

£40 + delivery, or pick them up if over Sussex way.

I went for something a bit more off roadey, so they are jus taking up garage space.
