Title: Fitting IRS gearbox
Stairlift bloke - December 18, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)
I fitted an IRS gearbox to my fug 2 today, the frame horns needed pulling together a bit but I put this down to distorsion when it was converted to IRS.
When I offered up a drive shaft it fouled the top of the frame horns by a few mm is this still down to distorsion or is any modification needed? gearbox nosecone etc?
if not I suppose I will have to make custom mounts.
cheers
Tony

my IRS gearbox has no mods other than a hydrolic clutch and it fits easily, I don't recall even a hint of a problem fitting it. I'll never pretend to be a expert so I reckon a pic or two would be safest before advising.

If your gearbox horns were originally swing axle then you need to get out the big hammer to give clearance for the CV flanges. I heated mine up with the gas then hit ten barrels of sh#t out of them. You need to deform it by about half or there abouts :P No big deal just something else to do...

Thanks, I'm thinking of making a custom gearbox mount instead just to raise it 15 or 20mm. will this cause any problems?

maybe shifting problems...
the best is to support the underside of the horns with a anvil or other heavy thing.
and use the biggest hammer you got. I did the same. and cold (without flame)
raise the gearbox is also used. not many and is more work...

Personally I wouldn't raise the gearbox.
Two things as Rutger quite rightly says it could give you shifting problems (clearance etc)
But most importantly it will raise your C of G which 'could' compound any handling problems later on...
If you don't want to hit it, then cut it out and box it in :D

Thanks guys, I really don't want to beat the frame up cos it's painted up now, so I'm making my own mounts, I'll put some pics up when it's done.
