Title: gearbox identification

mattd - May 1, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
been trying to find what gearbox my fug has got. The guy I got it from said is was a van gearbox. Had loads of problems getting a clutch but on closer inspection and finding some numbers on the cover plate I have tied it down to a 215mm 25.4mm input shaft and 23 splines. This is a ford clutch the same as what I have in my rally car. Anyone heard of this before because when i look in the QH book i cant find any vw that runs on those sizes/ splines,

What's the code on the side of the box?
Normally VW G.boxes are easy to identify once you have the code.

what i cant work out is that my input shaft measures 25.4mm and as far as i can see vw never made anything with that size input shaft.

Could it be that it has a replacement input shaft, as you're running a non VW Engine?

The GB Engineering adaptor kits generally came with a replacement input shaft.

While I think the Alfa adaptors kept the same spline size and just extended the shaft maybe others alter it to match the donor engine's clutch.
