I've heard back form Kennedy engineering, and they can do me a plate at an acceptable price, including all the flywheel and stuff. They have however said that my transmission would never take the power  I'm not going to get into lengthy TransAtlantic phone calls, but if the gearbox won't take it, why's the kit even made! And how has everyone else got on? I have a spare box, and truthfully they ain't dear and they're easy to change, don't want it to eat through them too quick tho.

thats not strictly true, the gearbox will take it if your careful and sensible, also as a fug is so light the torque reaction on the axles will be nowhere near as bad as a heavy bodied old bug........but if you start hammering it you will need to beware that the standard gear-box may well need a super-diff and beefy side plates, plus hardened wood-ruff keys and welded gears........brace yourself for a bill of £1500 minimum...........hence, go get yourself a 911 gearbox and start with that.

I was previously told by the previous owner that Baileys CAN-AM F33 had a bug box from a 1303s and it was forever braking........

Also - regarding V8 conversions - also consider a Lexus V8 - scrapyards are full of em, all alloy 32 valve 4 litre V8, now very popular in the kit car scene, like cobras and westfields etc, many companies are now offering lots of conversion bits and bobs.........google it and I'm sure you will find more info, there was once a thread on the piston-heads forum in the engine section, but might have been the kit-car section.

also - have you considered a Subaru flat 6?

Standard Bug box in good nick 'should' be ok for 150 bhp but as always it will be the torque that kills it. Thing is, you don't fit in a V8 to take it gentle..... :D

There's a VW TRANSPORTER BUS BUGGY GEARBOX WITH V8 ADAPTER PLATE up on ebay at the moment, 99p start.
