Title: Diesel Fug?

BobSayers - September 4, 2008 11:01 AM (GMT)
Have any of you looked at the use of one of the modern small-capacity air or water-cooled diesel engines in a Fug? I'm thinking of the types used in some of the off-road vehicles like the Tomcar?

regards,

Bob

never heard of tomcar before so i just googled it and they look like good fun. dont know about putting in a fug. If i had the engine for one i think i would want the rest of it as well.

I really don't think a diesel would be a bad thing, modern ones do put out good power. With the engine as open as it is it really would make sence for proper off roading. I've had petrol and diesel 4x4s and am always a lot braver with the diesel when it comes to deep water. Properly set up petrol will go deep, but getting the cab full of water and needing bored holes in the floor so it will sink quick enough to grip the bottom on the way in is pretty cool. My wiring loom and fues box is all marine fitment, I even have double earth, but the Mirafiori cylinder head I have would hardly tollerate getting caught in the rain before arcing out. :(

How about a VW AAZ diesel, easy to convert to mate to original gearbox, 1.9TD will push a rail alonfg nicely! These are a popular conversion for a T3 Transporter, have a look on http://www.brick-yard.co.uk Ive got one in my crewcab and it pulls like a train even fully loaded. :D

i,ve got a 1Z TDI engine in the back off a baja and it performs realy well
good power great torque and 60+ mpg
only downside is the extra weight out back but if your steady on the gas it stays pointing the way u want

it would certainly be fun in a fug and the front wheels wouldn't be on the floor much

How did you get around the fly by wire issues?

i swapped the pump for an earlier one with a cable opperated throttle the bracket was a little different but nothing a grinder could'nt fix and then just timed it up and was away

Ive heard that the 1Z needs a higher pressure than the manual pump can really put out. No issues there?
Ive had a look at my bits and bobs and ive got everything i need for an AAZ install. So im hankering to go in that direction. :D

What box did you use, and what did you do about the gear linkage. Ive got a box from a deisel transporter but the linkage mounts on the side. I belive there is a conversion available by 'bears'?
