Title: Q plate fog & reverse lights not needed
Knighty - September 29, 2008 01:06 PM (GMT)
Just heard back from my work colleague who is a part-time MOT tester, here gos:
"Apparently a Q plate vehicle is tested as complying with the requirements as follows;
•For the purposes of emissions a vehicle registered before August 1975
•For all other purposes a vehicle registered before August 1971 – ie: Fog light not required (it only became mandatory in 1980 if memory serves me correctly)"
So as fog light and reversing lights became mandatory after that date (1975) you dont need either for a Q plate.....bonus!.......I'm just in the middle of fitting my new LED rear lamps and it is going to look nice and tidy without a reverse and fog lamp B)........yet another bonus with a Q plate

Thats what I did. No fog, no reverse, just indicators and hazzard. Iron cross lights to match the mirrors. And a motorbike tail tidy for a numberplate light.

Now that's good news B)
Just starting to re-wire my fug and was wondering about what lights I would need.........not many then!!!

Matt, I see by your pic that you have no mudguards, are you running it on the road like that or was it just the fact they were off when pic was done.
I have none fitted and am wondering how long before I get stopped. I know for MOT thay are not needed, but there are a few things you can get away with on MOT but will be fined if you go down the road. Like the MOT tyre advisory limit equates to points and a fine from the police etc.

100bob,
Not sure what country you drive in but in darkest Berkshire mudguards ARE an mot requirement; one third circumference minimum <_<
3 points a tyre, 2 for a faulty light....and if they think its unroadworthy they will take it there and then..... :(

Thing is they're not, it actually states that if a vehicle is designed to have them, ie pretty much any car, they have to be there, meaning you can't drive an ordinary car about with the front wing missing. SVA will require it, including the spec of size radius of edges etc, but it's not an MOT failure as they are unlikely to have a Fug spec sheet. MOT's are not designed to catch out kits and custom cars, that's for the SVA and inevitably the police. I shall soon fit some sooner or later, have original glassfibre ones and option of fabricating if need, but that is for personal safety to reduce odds of flicking a stone up. If they will MOT a Fug as a Beetle, it goes to prove there's a mass of loopholes.

Mudgaurds are not needed for mot purposes whatever county you are in. They come under construction and use as far as the old bill are concerned. I only drive mine on hot sunny days( we do get them every now and then). As far as prosecuting me for having none the prosecution will have to prove on a hot sunny day that It was going to rain. Been pulled a couple of times and they were more concerned about my exposed engine. If I get nicked I get nicked I will worry about it then. There are lots of hot rods running fenderless and some good info on some hot rod sites. If the old bill or vosa wanted to they could say a lot of things are not right with the fug like headlight height, but I could argue that I have an adjustable beem so therefore can raise the height. It goes on and on.......

besides the police reaction when they see the thing driving down the road is the same as the general publics, a stare that says WTF!!!.

Matt, do you mind me asking where you got those rear lights. They're fab.

Well we beg to differ then, I've seen the blue book on MOT's and its in there, cross sectional area, position.... the lot! Biggest pain in the a#se to make so I'd sooner not, but it will be a braver man than me to stand up in court and prove that the mudguards didn't come with the Fug kit as supplied :ph43r:
As for headlight height... its 14 inches minimum so easily acheivable on a lowered Fug B)
