Title: Been busy again...
Description: Rear suspension modification

Tigger - March 31, 2009 07:57 PM (GMT)
This winter I was determined to do something with the rear end on the Fug :(
Under load it toed out and under braking it toed in, even with the up-rated 944 bits and polyurehane bushes it wasn't good, I suppose I'm just trying to put too much power thru it :ph43r:

So, I've taken out the old..

...and fitted the new! Spercial joints (rose joints) with coil overs, hopefully it will steer in a striaght line now...with the added advantage of setting up the rear track much better!

that looks bloody cool.....did you buy that as a kit or get it made up? post some info up if you bought it....keep up the good work.

Nope all home grown, read a book on racing 911/930's and its the first thing they do for the track, so I thought I'd give it a go...like you do B) There are kits out there, but they are expensive and, in my mind not very good. Made up this lot for the price of a pair of second hand spring plates. Can supply drawings for anyone interested in giving it a go... :P

Now I've remembered how to post pictures (with a little help from Paul) I'll post some more once the shocks etc are on.

looks great!.......kinda makes sense too.......having replaced the bushes on my old 1303 and more recently on my fug, I can imagine there is a great deal of play in the standard design........ok for 50bhp beetles.......but once you start pushing over 200bhp through it, the bushes will compress much more and the toe will go all over the show........running toe-out on the driven wheels is a big no-no as it will make the car feel posessed........I like the idea of running rear coil-overs too, as its much easier to change and adjust spring rates.......with the torsion bar system its near impossible :(

what spring dampers are you now running tigger?.......I shall look forward to a poke around at stoneleigh!

how do you stop the arms moving from side to side? another link from the arm to chassis? let us know please...lol

Tigger - April 2, 2009 05:11 PM (GMT)
Knighty,
I intend to run 9 inch x 275 lb springs with Gaz coil over shocks, the originals I had on there were Gaz and I quite like them....another bonus is that I've saved 83kg by taking out the torsion bars etc. :D

xstore-guernsey,
Being semi trailing arms there is a bush up by the gearbox, so its triangluated to the torsion beam that runs across the frame...its no different to before except now I have a rose joint for a pivot point instead of the torsion bar B)

Tigger that looks like a great idea giving a bit more freedom for adjustment, I'm going to need to do a lot of research on the swing axle I've got to try and get anything worthwhile out of it! Had mine towed over to our business unit so I can start work on it and I couldn't believe the angle of the back wheels while I was following it

me being stupid again. i looked at mine today and remembered what i had posted...lol
when i was racing on the beach i was running the car with standard suspension plus coil-overs....cleaned up the tubes around the shock mounts and found that both had split the chassis where uva had made the rear joint. crap welding and not enough bracing in that area. :(

Ok, this is it.. all finished :D Everything seems to have gone back ok, but I have yet to drive it <_<

looking good Tigger :D

xstore-guernsey - April 8, 2009 08:59 PM (GMT)
did you get gaz to make you the shocks? how long are they?

Tigger - April 9, 2009 09:02 AM (GMT)
No they are standard, the length does depends on the application, mine are 380mm extended and 255mm compressed. I bought them through SSP which are part of the VW Hertiage Group, being aircooled thru and thru I always go back to what I know...not sure if that is a good thing or not but there you go :D

how does it feel when driving? did you need to change springs?
