Paul - April 10, 2009 09:53 AM (GMT)

Hi All,

Just a reminder it's Detling Kit Car show this weekend.

More info here : http://www.car-shows.co.uk/detlingkit.htm

I'm most likely to be popping in on Sunday unless anything goes wrong in which case it'll be Monday.

I've a list of bits to get for mine and will get some photos while I'm down there.

If anyone else is going and wants to meet then drop me a mail and we'll sort something.

Cheers

Paul.

Well I have just shoted down to the missus and got approval for sunday morning, so I will probably arrive at 10am ish......leave at 1pm ish......I will be in the fug, so if anyone is planning being around then, bell me on my mobile 0787 9427945 and we can meet up.

BBC weather shows as "sunny intervals, 15degC" for the kent postcode ME14 3JF ......sounds brill!!!

show guide here says gates open 10 till 5pm

well it was bleedin lovely once I got there - although some quite serious fog on the way there......absolutley great show, on that basis I wont be going to stoneleigh, as I have now had mi kit-car show hit for this year.......3 hr drive in the fug is just too much.....1hr to detling was enough!

hey paul - on the way back my fug started to over heat and I'm concerned you are going to make the same mistake as me........I'm now seriously looking at a new radiator position, infront of the engine, but behind the axles........what I think you should do it mount your rad longways pointing upward, with a scoop protruding downward to scoop underneath......or perhaps as you had it before with the lancia motor......the two 9" fans are just not totally up to the job of fully cooling the engine at speed on a sunny day.......looks like I got away with it in the morning as the weather was very colder then.....bell me if you want to talk it through

Knighty,

Sounds like you had a good day, very overcast and rain this end, sorry to hear that you are are not thiniking of coming to Stoneliegh now....I was looking forward to that debate on swing axle verses IRS :D :D

Knighty - The cooling stuff sounds weird. When mine was in front of the engine it was mostly blocked by the rear seat and only running one fan - I'd have thought it'd run cooler out in the open at the back.

Hi Paul - nice pics - I must say I thought my fug was really well recieved, I didnt even expect to be in any sort of show, but I felt quite at home in amongst a load of bugs, campers and about 10 beach buggies......my car is far from show standard - and never will be if I have anything to do with it, but I got the impression the vast majority of people had never seen one before and were very interested in it.

radiator wise.......what are your core dimensions for the 16V 1.7 alfa rad??.......I actually think most of my problems are:

A) used a second hand rad, so its possibly furred-up inside
2) a lack of high pressure cooling air, due to my new exhaust blocking it off!
3) all the hot air from the engine is just hitting the rad

I have now had a new idea, I'm gonna get a VW VR6 radiator, it measures 630mm x 320mm x 34mm core, which is about 25% bigger than my current rad core, but both coolant connectors are one one side only, which is perfect for neat water pipes.......mount it on the left hand side of the engine, hanging from the chassis side rail, next to the left carb.......then get two sections of 6" black poly drain pipe, attach them both to the roll bar on the side (forward facing), then duct them into the rad for good high pressure air feed, that way all pipework for air and water will be minimal, and me thinks it will look quite neat and cool too!!!......it will also allow two 12" fans.......it took me bloody ages to think of that!.......

heres the rad I'm gonna use:

Not trying to teach you guys to suck eggs or anything but a radiator needs to expell the hot air as well as receive cold air otherwise it doesn't work. So, you can make the rad as big as you like, but if its not in the air stream it won't work.

Can't believe you need such a big rad on an open car, something else is wrong Knighty :(

Knighty

If you do end up going for a new rad try http://www.appliedradiators.co.uk/ that I mentioned at the show.

That's where my new one came from and they do what appears to be the same one you mention above for £56.73 delivered.

They were very helpful mine had to be shipped in but it still only took a week or so.

Thanks Paul - I just checked their site, and the diagrams look a little different from the piccy on ebay so I may phone them to discuss, as it seems the one on ebay is an odd-ball for sure.....certainly worth finding out for a £40 save!

Hey tigger, I agree with what you say.......the main problem is my rad is not in the free stream of air.......hence why I need the "double drain pipe duct"........the main issue is creating a head of pressure in front of the rad, to push the air through the core, this is achieved by creating a diffuser effect, where by the grille inlet inlet is much smaller in cross sectiobnal area when compared to the forward face area of the rad.......diffusion = efficient conversion of flow to pressure

regarding the rad exit, its not too critical, but it certainly needs one for sure!
