Title: Took off the side rails

gtmdriver - August 24, 2009 08:34 AM (GMT)
I decided to cut the extra side rails off my chassis.

My car is going to be strictly road only, and they weren't all that well attached anyway, so I decided to remove them.

The mudguards were also attached to the rails so they had to go as well. They were made from alloy sheet but were lined with cement?

I also took off the front mudguards at the same time. They were actual mudguards but not UVA originals. They seem to be of the trailer type.

Can anyone tell me whether those small tubes welded between the chassis and the Beetle bump stop towers are standard, original or even desirable? I'm not sure they should be there.

The next job is to un-rivet all the body panels and dispose of them.

yep they are on mine

re body I have my uva bonnet and side panels of at the moment so if you want mould off them i can probably get them made up

The smallers tubes are deffo original, I'd leave em in if I were you :P

Thanks for the information.

I'll leave the bracing tubes alone then.

I've got a set of body panels now so I can take moulds from them if I need to.

Thanks for the offer though.

Like a number of people on the forum I could really do with a seat to take a mould from.

Caloun...... I could do with a mould of your bonnet, It's my missing bit!!! if you can help that would be very cool!!

GTMdriver, won't do anything to it for about a year eh??? ;) good on ya :D glad your getting stuck in

Now is definatly the time to rip out the nasty stuff like you're doing, but also put right the stuff UVA didn't seem to understand. I guess the shear amount of tubing makes them strong enough, but so much of it is in the wrong place and at the wrong angle in the "kit car" version, cue the foundation geometry lesson. Additional race bracing probably isn't that necessary for most of us, including me, but it does make for a better Fug.

Good plan.

My car will be road use only. Which bits of additional bracing would you recommend that I add?

Gtmdriver,
Fug original welding tends to be pretty amature, I ground a number of them off and rewelded, also added a few triangles in corners here and there, that was the first thing. Next I'd say definatly more support on the hoop is needed, but you do have a cross brace on yours anyway. I also feel bracing under what would be bonnet is really needed, your depending on the front axle and the floor otherwise. Think it's worth a couple across at floor level too. I quess a Fug would hold together pretty well if crashed, but I always like to edge my bets.

gtmdriver - August 28, 2009 05:56 PM (GMT)
Yes I've noticed that some of the welding is a bit on the untidy side. I might get in there with a grinder and the TIG.

As you say my roll hoop has an extra diagonal anyway but I'll cetainly look into some extra bracing at the front end.

If I put X bracing under the bonnet I'll have to make it removable as I may need to get the tank in and out at some future time.

Once again thanks for the info.

This is true, I would actually have to take my front axle off to get my fuel tank out. That said, my fuel tank is brand new and aluminium, what are the odds of needing to remove it?

MrMunster - August 29, 2009 05:14 PM (GMT)
Cal,

Sometimes emails from forums get shuffled into the junk files by the various email systems?
