Well given I've been dealing with lots of companies recently in my attempts to get the Fug running again I'll start this new section off.

The distributor that came with the Alfa engine looked like it had been stored in a swamp when we opened it up during a troubleshooting session.

All the insulation from the hall-effect sender had rotted off, the mechanical advance section was seized solid and had worn springs. The vacuum advance was on the list of things I'd probably change anyway.

Whilst looking for parts I came across the website for H & H that I'd previously seen at one of the kit car shows.

I ended up using them for a full refurbish of the distributor rather than replacing bits myself.

The rest is probably best dealt with by the following before and after shots:

The rotor was replaced, there's now a genuine Magnetti Marelli distributor cap on there (albeit with the wrong cylinder numbers marked on it), pretty much everything else has been replaced or cleaned up.

I suspect they're more aimed at those with slightly more classic vehicles seeking authenticity, but I'm very happy with the work they carried out.

hey paul - looks like they did a fine job there, always nice to know of such a company......I must say your distributor is completley different to mine, which surprises me as we both have hydraulic tappet 1.7 alfa boxers with carbs.....what year is your engine???......I'm told mine was from a G plate which makes it 1989......

Excellent work.

Would you mind telling us how much it cost please?

Well their website has reconditioning starting at £50.

But .. this one came in at £120 for the completed work and return postage. They quoted that up front based on the model and didn't add anything else to the bill. Turned around in about 6 working days.

Not particularly cheap, but given the Magnetti Marelli distributor doesn't seem to be the easiest thing to get parts/replacements for I was happy that it was one less thing for me to work on.

Knighty - Alfa used both Bosch and Magnetti Marelli ignition systems, could yours be Bosch?

That's a very fair price.

A new Aldon distributor for an A series engine is around £120 with points and around £170 with their electronic ignition fitted.

yup - mine is bosch - that explains it!

also I recently found out the reason of my distributor tapping noise......turns out you need an anti-pulse-valve mounted in the vaccum line from the carb to the distributor, I'm now told all alfa-boxers with carbs had em.....you can disconnect it, but aparrently this leads to advanced ignition at low rpm, so therefore increases overheating potential - not good, so I will be getting one soon from the link below:

the arrow must be pointed toward the carb - very important that!!!

Blimey there doesn't seem to be any cheap source for those anti-pulse valves!

It arrived today, I was hoping it would turn out to be solid gold ;)
