Title: Swapped from wheel bolts to studs and nuts.

gtmdriver - September 6, 2009 07:22 PM (GMT)
The wheel bolts I got with my period Wolfrace wheels were not the correct ones. They had the wrong taper so an extra washer had been added to try to compensate.

The correct bolts were tricky to get hold of but strangely enough I could get M14 x 1.5 Wolfrace nuts which were originally made for the VW Campers.

I got a set of screw in studs from Machine 7 and fitted them at the weekend.

Mine is done too, with bigger wheels it's just making it hard for the sake of it using bolts.

Hey GTM - seeing what you have done has made me realise my fronts are not good........I run a 30mm wheel spacer, for the rim to clear the brake caliper, as the fronnt rim is 8" wide........hence the extended M14 wheel bolts are a pain in the ass to install.......upon closer inspection the bolt threads are starting to stretch, and they have dome bolt seats.....in tapered/conical wheel holes........a proper bodge......have just ordered from Machine7 eight off 60mm x M14 extended studs, and a pack of 10 tapered/conical wheel nuts from ebay........all for less than £30!!!......all I need now is some loctite to jam the studs in place!........

well done for finding the studs from machine7........nobody else seems to offer such items B)

have just installed my new studs and nuts, using some green, high strength, high temp loctite...... now the 25mm spacers and wheels are a doddle to lift into place - unlike before - looks much safer too B)

This guy is a good source of wheel nuts and bolts - I got the ones for my GP buggy from him as I needed nuts to work with the 5 to 4 stud adaptors and his prices are pretty good, plus he does all different types of taper/cone ends to suit your wheels.

http://www.mistertee.co.uk plus with a name like Mister Tee's wheel nut emporium what's not to like :)

I used Loctite 638 High Strength Retaining Compound.

It is around £20 for a 50ml bottle but is also available for around £4 in a 3ml tube.
